Emergency Management

What is an emergency?

Provincial legislation defines emergencies as situations or impending situations that pose a risk to life and/or property, including the environment, social infrastructure, or the economy.

In Ontario, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) has a legislated responsibility to have an emergency management program that provides direction and coordination to the ministry's emergency preparedness and response plans related to:

  • farm animal disease
  • food contamination
  • agricultural plant disease
  • pest infestation

OMAFRA also plays a supporting role to federal agencies and other ministries during other emergency situations including foreign animal diseases, extreme weather events, and large-scale power outages.
