When you decide to use a pesticide, choose the best formulations and application methods for the situation. Take all possible precautions to prevent the exposure of people and non-target organisms to the pesticide. To limit the negative impacts of pesticides:

  • Select the least-toxic pesticide that will do the job. The pesticide recommendation tables included throughout this book rank registered products based on efficacy, user toxicity and environmental impact.
  • Use application methods that minimize pesticide drift or spread in the environment.
  • Use only a properly calibrated sprayer.
  • Use spot treatments to limit treatments to only the plants or fields where pests are a problem.
  • Take precautions to prevent exposure of humans and non-target organisms to pesticides.
