Incidence

Stresses such as leaf diseases, insects, frequent or untimely harvests, winter conditions and low soil pH increase the severity of crown and root rots. Stresses during the growing season render the plants more susceptible to winter stress. Good crop management practices, especially a good harvesting schedule, and maintenance of adequate soil fertility and proper pH help to reduce disease severity. Control leafhoppers in alfalfa. Avoid mechanical injury of the crowns as much as possible. Crowns are easily injured by machinery and by livestock tramping, especially when the soil is wet.
