Notes on Saskatoon Berry Insects
Woolly elm aphid

Identification

The woolly elm aphid and its close relative the woolly apple aphid, are bluish-white aphids with a white, waxy, wool-like coating. They feed on the roots of saskatoon bushes, 2-10 cm below the soil surface. Infested bushes lack vigour. Leaves turn yellow in late July-August and drop prematurely. Severely affected bushes may fail to leaf out in the spring.

Period of activity

The aphids overwinter on elm trees and migrate to saskatoon bushes in June and July. Aphid colonies are found on roots of saskatoon bushes in July to October.

Management Notes

If practical, remove wild alternate hosts in the vicinity.
