Early symptoms include yellowish spots and swellings on leaves and fruit. Older infections develop spiky outgrowths. On juniper, the fungus appears as woody round galls. Jelly like horns grow out of these galls in the spring.

Saskatoon-juniper rust gall
In spring, after a rain, juniper galls produce spores that can spread to saskatoons up to 2 km away. The disease is favoured by cool wet spring weather.
