Notes on Saskatoon Berry Insects
Saskatoon bud moth

Identification

Bud moth larvae are yellow to light green and feed on developing buds as buds break open and expand. They cause tiny holes in the flower buds, which may ooze at the point of injury. Leaves are tied together with webs, and larvae can be found inside.

Period of activity

Saskatoon bud moths overwinter as pupae. Bud moth adults are active in early spring and lay eggs on the base of buds and the bark of twigs. Eggs hatch in April and the larvae bore into the base of the bud. The larvae are full grown by petal fall.

Management Notes

Apply superior oil at bud break to affect egg-lay and hatch. Use a high volume of water to ensure thorough coverage of twigs and buds.
