Notes on Blueberry Diseases
Blueberry scorch

Identification

Blueberry scorch is a complex of virus diseases, which include Sheep Pen Hill disease in New Jersey and blueberry scorch on the west coast. Blueberry scorch has not been found in Ontario but it is a very serious problem where it occurs. Growers must be aware of the potential for this disease and quick to respond if it develops. Symptoms include leaf and flower blight, advanced necrosis and eventual death of diseased plants. Some varieties show no symptoms while others show severe symptoms. A characteristic symptom on some cultivars is the sudden blighting of blossoms, which then hang on the bushes all -season.

Period of activity

The disease is probably transmitted by aphids and spreads quickly in a circular pattern from the infected plant. Aphids can be present any time in the growing season. There can be a long latent period, up to two years, from the time plants are infected until symptoms appear.

Management notes

Purchase virus-tested planting stock from an accredited nursery. Test bushes that show symptoms of the disease, by sending samples of young leaves and blossoms to the Pest Diagnostic Clinic in Guelph. Remove and destroy infected bushes.
