Imidacloprid Re-Evaluation Update

Imidacloprid (Admire 240 F, Alias 240 SC) is an insecticide which belongs to the Group 4A neonicotinoids. Currently, this active ingredient is registered on apples for control of mullein bug, leafhopper, tentiform leafminer, rosy apple aphid and green apple aphid.

The Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) recently released a proposed re-evaluation decision for imidacloprid and is accepting public comments until February 21, 2017 (90 calendar days from publication). A summary of this decision is outlined below. For contact information, see the PMRA Publications Section. To read the official summary of the consultation document, see Proposed Re-evaluation Decision PRVD2016-20. All comments/suggestions received by the PMRA prior to February 21, 2017 will be considered and a science-based approach will be applied in making a final decision on imidacloprid.

Important information for apple growers:

  • PMRA's proposed re-evaluation decision was based on a review of scientific information provided by pesticide manufacturers, provinces, Environment and Climate Change Canada, and published scientific information.
  • Risks to pollinators were not included in this re-evaluation as they are part of an ongoing pollinator risk assessment (see Re-evaluation Note REV2016-05 for more details).
  • PMRA is proposing to phase-out all agricultural uses of imidacloprid over 3 to 5 years.
  • Proposed phase-out is based on the risk to aquatic invertebrates.
  • Health assessment did not identify any human health concerns from any exposure route when used according to current label standards.
  • With the loss of Diazinon as of December 31, 2016, there are no alternative chemical groups registered that are recommended for good IPM practice for the control of mullein bug in Ontario apple orchards.
  • Rotation between different chemical groups is critical for effective resistance management.
  • At the present time, the PMRA has not released proposed re-evaluation decisions for other neonicotinoid products.
