Receives Temporary Registration in Canada

The following information
was circulated by the PMRA last month: "New Product for the Canadian apple
Industry. The active ingredient 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) and SmartFresh technology,
its associated end-use product, are eligible for temporary registration under
Section 17 of the Pest Control Products Regulations. SmartFresh is used on apples
immediately after harvesting to delay ripening, thereby maintaining fruit flesh
firmness and extending the storage life of apples destined for immediate sale
or storage. By extending the storage life of apples, it is expected that this
product will increase the competitiveness of the Canadian apple industry in international
markets. SmartFresh is applied to air-tight apple storage areas without the applicator
or others being present. Risks to workers and consumers of apples, as well as
to the environment, are low."
This temporary registration is until December 2005, at
which time additional efficacy data will be required. Research needed to generate
the necessary data will commence this fall, both on commercial and small-scale
