A member of the mint family and a native Ontario species which is sometimes grown as an ornamental plant. The weedy form of this plant usually occurs in dense patches in poorly drained areas of a field.
Perennial, reproducing by seed and underground rhizomes.
It is distinguished by its square stems (a feature of all mint species),
its thick, white, brittle underground roots (rhizomes) and hairly
leaves.
