Below are some quick summary notes on the current winter wheat varieties. At last, we have excellent data on Fusarium Head Blight (FHB) and deoxynivalenol (DON) or vomitoxin differences between the varieties. (See "Fusarium Facts" article). These are listed as strengths and weaknesses where appropriate. "Seed size?" is another new criteria you may notice. This simply relates to seeding rates, as large seeded varieties will take more "pounds per acre" to reach the desired plant population. Not a huge factor, but with seed costs approaching $50.00 per acre another factor worth noting. Read on, and let me know what you disagree with! P. Johnson
