Western Bean Cutworm Trap Counts Increasing

Western bean cutworm trap counts are still on the increase in Ontario, with some sites reaching into the double digits for moth counts. The current trap count maps are available at: http://www.cornpest.ca/default/index.cfm/wbc-trap-network/weekly-maps-of-wbc-trap-catches/

Though we have not found egg masses or larvae yet at trap sites that our crew has scouted, I do expect that the moths in Ontario are laying eggs. What level of damage they will do this year is still uncertain, though it should still be a reasonably low level, based at least on the trap counts we have experienced so far. That said, corn and edible bean fields should be scouting in the next few weeks for eggs and larvae. Corn is the first crop they will choose, especially if it is still in pretassel stage. Find attached in this CropPest newsletter an infosheet to help with scouting in the corn crop. Next week will include an infosheet for scouting in the dry bean crop.
