Three New Herbicide Options for Edible Bean Growers

Weed control options for Edible bean growers have increased with the registration of Frontier (PPI & PRE), Pursuit (PPI & PRE) and the tank-mix of Dual II Magnum + Pursuit (PPI ) on all phaseolus vulgaris species of edible beans. These market classes include: black, dutch brown, cranberry, kidney, lima, otebo, pinto, small red Mexican, snap, yellow eye and white beans. Previously these herbicide programs were only registered for use on 2 to 3 different classes of edible beans.

However, through the efforts of Dr. Peter Sikkema and Todd Cowan with the University of Guelph (Ridgetown Campus) the crop uses on each product label were expanded under the User Requested Minor Use Label Expansion (URMULE) program. Application rates, timings and precautions with these herbicides have not changed and can be found in Chapter 7 (Edible Beans), in OMAFRA Publication 75, Guide to Weed Control.
