Wheat Disease Pressure Low for Now!

The overall disease pressure has been low this year but with many fields developing slowly this spring it could change quickly especially if wet conditions continue in conjunction with warmer temperatures. The most common wheat disease this spring has been Septoria leaf blotch but again at very low levels. Prolonged humid or wet conditions will encourage Septoria and powdery mildew since rain showers or storms become important in spreading the disease from the lower leaves to the upper leaves.

Should a fungicide be used?

At these low levels and early growth stages, a foliar fungicide application would be unwarranted in most cases. This is where a comprehensive scouting program will aid in the decision process. If you or your consultant see the disease progress rapidly into the upper canopy and the forecast is for a prolonged wet period with cool to warm temperatures, then a fungicide application may be useful in fields with a high yield potential.
