2008 Soybean Aphid and Soybean Rust Monitoring

It's time again for us to start monitoring for soybean aphids and soybean rust. Similar to past years, we will be monitoring rust sentinel plots and aphid field sites across southern and eastern Ontario. Over 60 sites will be monitoring weekly by our crew as well as by some very helpful reps and consultants in various regions. Our scouting results will be uploaded weekly including maps and commentary on both the Ontario Soybean Growers website at www.soybean.on.ca and the USDA PIPE Website. Please note that the USDA PIPE domain has changed to support specific web addresses for each pest that we are monitoring.

For the Soybean Rust Monitoring USDA PIPE webpage, the domain is now:

As for soybean aphid populations so far, a few of our sites have soybean aphids colonizing on soybeans but at very low levels and is what we normally see at this time of year. These populations are coming from local sources of buckthorn. But ladybeetles are present in many fields, waiting to find these aphids and in many cases, will take out a colonizing aphid population before they can build in numbers.

All fields should start to be scouted weekly for both aphids in early July to September to ensure thresholds are not reached.
