Yield! Yield! Yield! are often the three most important considerations that many growers use to select their corn hybrids. I am not minimizing the importance of yield. It is still the most important consideration and will remain so. Unfortunately as we are observing this year with ear moulds, not all hybrids or varieties react the same to external stresses such as diseases, environmental conditions, cultural practices, and insects. Just like my two children are not identical and when I think I have them figured out they throw me a curve. The same holds true for corn hybrids. No two hybrids are identical and they should not be expected to react similarly in all conditions and fields. Remember, each field is different and therefore select hybrids with resistance or tolerance to those diseases present in that field. Many of todays hybrids not only protect against the most common diseases but yield very well. Reduce your disease risk next year and select the appropriate hybrids/varieties that meet your needs. Remember it is your responsibility! So dont take such an important decision lightly! You can still go for yields but spread your risk by using a variety of different hybrids (at least three). The same can be said for wheat and soybeans.
