Be Alert for Fusarium and
Other Diseases in Wheat?

As the wheat crop heads towards "heading" (sorry for the pun - it was late), be on the alert for Fusarium and other leaf/head diseases especially if the wet weather conditions remain. As in previous years, Fusarium updates can be obtained at The Ontario Weather Network (OWN).

Another OWN service is a site specific DONcast calculator which is available through subscription. Bookmark the OWN site and keep abreast of your Fusarium risk.

Continue scouting for other wheat diseases such as Septoria, powdery mildew, spot blotch, etc and determine whether a fungicide application is necessary (is the flag leaf at risk?) at this time. If not re-evaluate (scout) these fields for leaf diseases on a regular basis and remember to take Fusarium risk into consideration as well.
