Matador & Warrior Insecticides Registered for Key Insect Pests of Crop Group 6, Legume Vegetables

The Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) recently announced the approval of minor use label expansions for Matador and Warrior (cyhalothrin-lambda) insecticides for control of a number of key insect pests of the Legume vegetables crop group. The Legume vegetables crop group includes soybeans, snap beans, lima beans, dry beans, lupins, faba beans, chickpeas, lentils, all types of peas, sword beans, asparagus beans and yardlong beans.

Matador and Warrior were already labeled in Canada for insect management on a number of other major and minor crops. Additionally Matador and Warrior had been labeled as an emergency use for soybean aphids in a number of provinces during the past several years.

These minor use registrations address a significant minor use priority for producers of Legume vegetables across Canada. Matador which will be replaced in the marketplace by
Warrior in the near future are both now registered on all Legume vegetables for the control of soybean aphids, potato leafhoppers, cutworms, corn borers, Lygus bugs including tarnished plant bug, pea aphids and grasshoppers.

Matador or Warrior can be applied at a rate of 83 mL product per hectare in 100 to 200 L water per hectare as a foliar spray. The need and timing of application should be based on the presence of vulnerable pest stages and significant populations as determined by local monitoring. A maximum of 3 applications per year are permitted with a pre-harvest interval of 21 days for soybeans and 14 days for all other Legume vegetables.

Matador or Warrior insecticides should be used in an integrated pest management program and in rotation with other management strategies. Follow all other precautions and directions for use on the Matador and Warrior labels.

We wish to thank the personnel of Syngenta Crop Protection Canada Inc. for their support of these registrations and the personnel of the Pest Management Regulatory Agency for evaluating and approving these important pest management tools.
