San Jose Scale (SJS) on Peaches

Regional Information

  • Pest activity is extremely site specific and not relevant for regional crop report.

Site Specific Monitoring

  • Historical experience.
  • Fruit harvest assessment.

Monitoring Techniques Thresholds

  • Examination of scaffold limbs and bark for scale presence prior to pruning
  • Sticky band tapes have been used to detect crawler movement where overwintering populations evident.
  • No established thresholds during growing season.
  • Need for controls based on visible fruit injury in previous year.

Additional Notes

  • Growers recommended to routinely apply dormant oil at least once every third year. If scale is serious may require 2-3 consecutive years to clean up the infestation. Thorough spray coverage is critical.
  • Sticky tape to monitor males and timing of diazinon for crawlers is not as effective as dormant oils.

Commonly Used Control Options

  • Dormant oil applied early before buds swell.
  • Annual application of dormant oil for mite control at pink will provide annual suppression of scale (SJS)
