Oblique-Banded Leafroller (OBLR) on Peaches

Regional Information

  • Has not been a major problem since 1993.
  • Historically significant potential pest especially on split pit cultivars
  • Industry moving away from split pit prone varieties eg. Candor

Site Specific Monitoring

  • Site specific monitoring may be helpful for peach in blocks adjacent to OBLR infested blocks of sweet cherry, apple and pear.
  • Use of mating disruption technology to control OFM on peach/nectarine may increase risk of OBLR damage - regular monitoring required.

Monitoring Techniques Thresholds

  • Monitor fruit (when looking for TPB injujry) for OBLR activity, surface feeding of fruit during growing season
  • Harvest assessment.

Additional Notes

  • Cyanide content of peach and nectarine leaves prevents establishment of resident populations.
  • Fruit injury on peach nectarine occurs when local population pressure is high on nearby pear, apple and sweet cherry hosts.
  • Apricot and plum can be alternate hosts.

Commonly Used Control Options

  • Pyrethroids used for control of OFM also control of OBLR
  • No special sprays recommended for OBLR in recent years
  • Resistance of OBLR to organophosphates (Guthion, APM, Sniper, Imidan, etc.) is widespread on apple and pear so these products are probably no longer effective on OBLR in stone fruit.
