Regional Information
Site Specific Monitoring
- Site specific intensive monitoring required - no regional patterns
- Orchard history is important
- Identify source of migrants eg. wild hosts
- Apricots, cherries and plums are good indicators on borders
of orchard
- A pest of rising importance
- Traps available but not particularly reliable
Monitoring Techniques Thresholds
- Fruit examination along outside 2-3 rows of block next wild
hosts and bush areas
- If injury at abandoned sites, expect migration into orchards
in 3-5 days
- Characteristic cresent shaped egg laying scar.
- Threshold: any new damage to fruit
- Monitoring 5-7 days after insecticide application can help determine
need for reapplication of controls
- Harvest assessment
Additional Notes
- Warm temperature (above 16 °C) following a rain is ideal
for emergence around shuck fall period
- Expect emergence if mean temperature is 13-16 °C for 3 to
4 days, mean above 16 °C for 3 days, or if over 24 °C
for 2 consecutive days.
- Adults typically emerge over a 3-4 week period beginning just
after bloom. Egg laying and fruit injury begins within 2 weeks
after emergence.
- Emergence can be prolonged to 4-6 weeks.
Commonly Used Control Options
- Guthion or APM or Sniper border spray
- Control is more critical on apricot, plums, nectarines &
cherries
- First generation OFM spray often falls within PC activity period
but is unlikely to provide sufficient control in problem sites.
- Damage potential may increase if mating disruption for OFM used;
monitoring is essential.
