Brown Rot of Peaches
Regional Information
- Provides general guideline only for best timing to apply protective
fungicides and when crop is most susceptible.
Site Specific Monitoring
- Disease/infection related to site sanitation and presence of overwintering
mummies
- History of incidence in each block, cultivar susceptibility, and surrounding
pressure (other peach blocks and fruit crops such as cherries, plums
apricots, etc. infected in the past) are all important factors
- Blossom-blight observations during bloom and shuck may help assess
the effectiveness of past sprays and the need for follow-up controls
Monitoring Techniques Thresholds
- Examine at least 50 shoots/block (5 shoots per tree) at shuck split
- No firm thresholds
- Critical timings are
- bloom through shuck split
- small green fruit of clingstone (prior to pit hardening)
- harvest of early season split pit
- preharvest phase for all varieties
Additional Notes
- Critical timing is bloom through shuck fall with warm (>12 °C)
temperaturs and free moisture present
- Clingstones are more susceptible
- Sterol inhibitor fungicide resistance warning: Limit this fungicide
group to 2 applications per year.
- Use Rovral when pressure is high and wet weather, e.g. once during
bloom and once as pre-harvest. Limit 2 applications per season
- Sulphur not recommended
- Harsh on beneficials
Commonly Used Control Options
- Pre-season (before bloom begins) or late season (after harvest) removal
of mummified fruit
- Protectant approach is the best control strategy
- Consult Publication 360: Fruit Production Recommendations for up-to-date
information on product effectiveness and choices.
- When crop is most susceptible use most effective products
- When disease pressure is high such as prolonged wet weather, use most
effective products
