Choosing the right tree and shrub species

When planting trees it is recommended to use species that are native to Ontario. In addition, to help conserve our natural plant populations it is best to plant trees or shrubs that originate from parent trees that are growing within your designated ecological zone. Genetic zoning in Ontario was established by the Forest Gene Conservation Association (FGCA).

2001 - 2002 Native Plant Resource Guide for Ontario

A listing of private nurseries is available to landowners interested in ordering trees or shrubs for reforestation, for windbreaks or for smaller tree planting projects. The 25 page booklet can be ordered from the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources Information Centre at telephone number: 1-800-667-1940. Single copies are $2.50 per copy plus $2.50 for shipping by Priority Post. A number of nurseries provide bulk orders of bare rooted trees at very reasonable prices.

The guide also contains useful information about how to plan for successful naturalization, site preparation, choosing the right species to match the site, planting, after-planting maintenance and much more.
