Fertilizer Recommendation Tables - 2007 Revision

Author: Keith Reid - Soil Fertility Specialist/OMAFRA
Creation Date: October 2007
Last Reviewed: October 2007

Enclosed are copies of all fertilizer requirement tables for field grown crops dated fall 2005, along with lime requirement tables and messages which are printed out on soil test forms for specific conditions. Please discard your old tables.

Tables listing the Crop Nutrient Removal values that are used in the NMAN2 computer program have been included. These will be updated from time to time by OSMRSC as data becomes available.

  • Changes to the recommendations in 2007 include:
  • New nitrogen recommendations for Ginseng
  • New nitrogen recommendations for processing tomatoes under drip fertigation on coarse textured soils
  • Revised nitrogen recommendation for carrots grown on established muck
  • Revised nitrogen recommendation for field grown nursery crop
  • The soil test rating system has been changed, effective January 1, 2008, to reflect the probability of response to added nutrients, as shown in the following table:
Soil Test Rating

(printed on soil test reports prior to January 1, 2008)

Response Category

(printed on soil test reports after January 1, 2008)

Low                   (L)

High Response                     (HR)

Medium           (M)

Medium Response               (MR)

High                  (H)

Low Response                      (LR)

Very High      (VH)

Rare Response                     (RR)

Excessive           (E)

No or Negative Response    (NR)

An infosheet has been prepared that gives more detail on the response categories (attached).

All soil tests reporting soil test categories will include the following short message, for a period of 1 year

New Categories on Soil Test Reports

The categories for analytical values for phosphorus, potassium and magnesium on soil test reports have changed to reflect the probability of profitable crop response to applied nutrients. No changes have been made to the actual crop specific fertility recommendations. These changes only affect the reporting system.

HR, MR, LR, RR, and NR denote, respectively, high, medium, low, rare and no probabilities of profitable crop response to applied nutrient.

Profitable response to applied nutrients occurs when the increase in crop value, from increased yield or quality, is greater than the cost of the applied nutrient.

For more information, see (New Soil Test Categories).

Fertilizer recommendations in these tables have been approved by the Ontario Soil Management Research and Services Committee and the appropriate sub-committee.

The OSMRSC executive committee welcomes suggestions and research data to make changes to the recommendations. Such information should be forwarded to:
