* Liming to pH 7.0 is recommended only for club-root control on cole crops.

The Buffer pH

Different soils with any one soil pH value, say 5.2 will require different amounts of lime to bring the pH to a particular desired level depending chiefly on the clay and organic matter content of each soil. The soil pH is used to determine which soils need to be limed but a separate soil test, the buffer pH, is run on soils needing lime to determine the amount of lime required. For soils needing lime (based on soil pH) the table on page 26 may be used to determine the amount of lime required to reach different "target" soil pH values required for different crops.

The table of lime requirements on page 26 is based on the equations presented below with values rounded to the nearest t/ha. A minimum recommendation was set a 1 t/ha and a maximum of 20 t/ha. More exact requirements or requirements to adjust soil pH to 7.0 may be calculated from the equations on this page.

Lime Requirement Equations Based on Soil Buffer pH

pH to which soil is limed

Equation

7.0 Lime (t/ha)* = 334.5 - 90.79 pHB ** + 6.19 pHB2
6.5 Lime (t/ha) = 291.6 - 80.99 pHB + 5.64 pHB2
6.0 Lime (t/ha) = 255.4 - 73.15 pHB + 5.26 pHB2

5.5

Lime (t/ha) = 37.7 - 5.75 pHB

* Based on lime with an agricultural index of 75.

** pHB = pH in Shoemaker, McLean and Pratt (SMP) buffer.
