Nitrogen Requirements for Turf and Nursery SodGreens & tees -Nitrogen to be recommended by turf specialist; not more than 400 kg N/ha in 6‑8 applications, 250 kg N/ha is usually sufficient for established greens. Not more than 50 kg N/ha per application*. Lawns, fairways, playing fields - Nitrogen to be recommended by turf specialist; not more than 200 kg N/ha in 4 applications if clippings are left on. Not more than 50 kg N/ha per application except for the late fall application. The last application of the season should be made in late October to early November, after leaf growth has stopped but before freeze-up, at a rate not to exceed 100 kg N/ha.* Low use turf - Nitrogen to be recommended by turf specialist; 50 kg N/ha applied once per season.* Nursery sod - Prior to the final cultivation before seed bed preparation, apply 90 kg N/ha where the soil is a coarse texture. Where the soil is a medium or fine texture, is high in organic matter, or has a history of luxuriant growth, reduce the initial application to 50 kg N/ha. On turf with less than 85% groundcover, apply 70 kg N/ha as early as feasible the spring after seeding. Reduce the rate to 35 kg N/ha where vigorous growth is evident. In mid or late June apply 50 kg N/ha. Withhold further applications until three weeks prior to harvesting at which time apply 35 kg N/ha. Where sod is held over a second winter apply 45 kg N/ha in September, early November, late May, and every 10 weeks until harvest. * Divide kg/ha by 100 to obtain kg/100 m2.
