1 Rates may need to be decreased on heavier soil types or on high organic matter soils.

2. Some cultivars produce a higher alkaloid content than others do. Nitrogen rates at the low end of the range should be used for these cultivars. Cultivar characteristics can be found in the OMAFRA information on "Recommended Tobacco Varieties" for the current year.

Nitrogen fertilizer application should be split between transplanting and side-dressing. Apply 50% of nitrogen at transplanting, and the balance up to the final cultivation. Application of nitrogen rates in excess of recommendations, and nitrogen applied after the last cultivation, can result in undesirable leaf quality, especially in the upper leaves.
