Note: For simplicity, Trade Marks and Plant Patents have been
omitted
1 - Early maturing, red strains preferred e.g. Jonagored.
2 - Scab Resistant Cultivar. For more details refer to OMAFRA
factsheet: Disease Resistant Apple Cultivars, Order No. 98-013.
General Planting - Well-known varieties of
proven performance.
Limited/Regional Planting - These varieties have value
but should be limited in extent of planting. Some may have proven
valuable in trial plantings and warrant further commercial experience.
Others may be adapted to a specific region or be useful only for selected
markets. Growers are encouraged to investigate market potential before
planting newer strains or cultivars. Due to the inherent variability
in each of the locations by county, growers are wise to thoroughly
investigate the cultivar attributes with regard to season length and
heat requirements, e.g. The cultivar "Goldrush" should only
be planted where it can be finished. It requires a very long growing
season and will be the last variety harvested in a 3000 CHU area,
e.g. the cultivar "Ambrosia" is known to be heat driven
and should only be planted on the best sites in areas where total
heat accumulation is questionable.
Trial Planting - These are promising, newer varieties which
require further testing to establish their commercial value.
