Supporting Ontario's Agri-food and Agri-products Sectors

The Canadian Agricultural Partnership (the Partnership) is a five-year commitment by Canada's federal, provincial and territorial governments that will support Canada's agri-food and agri-products sectors.

Strategic initiatives including cost-share funding support projects in the following key priority areas, with research and innovation continuing to be a focus across all programming:

Protection and assurance to reinforce the foundation for public trust in the sector through improved assurance systems in food safety and plant and animal health.

The Partnership programming is flexible and provides opportunities to address emerging priorities and challenges faced by our agri-food sector.

Place to Grow: Agri-food Innovation Initiative

Place to Grow: Agri-Food Innovation Initiative provides cost-share funding opportunities to agriculture and food-value chain partners, which encourages greater collaboration to identify opportunities and address challenges in the sector.

The Place to Grow Guide for Applicants provides detailed program information around available funding and applicant requirements. Additionally, program inquiries can be directed to the Agriculture Information Contact Center at: 1-877-424-1300.

Eligible applicants can apply for cost-share funding beginning August 15, 2019, when the Place to Grow intake opens. This intake will remain open until Sept. 27, 2019.

Cost-share Funding for Farmers and Other Businesses

The next application intake for farmers and other businesses (plant health) will occur in Winter 2020 with approvals for the Spring season.

The Ontario Soil and Crop Improvement Association (OSCIA) administers cost-share funding to farmers and other businesses (plant health). Program details, including how to apply, program guides, and application forms can be found on the OSCIA website.

In addition, a targeted application intake is open for eligible farmers to apply for cost-share funding to help offset the cost of testing for DON in corn. Additional details can be found on the OSCIA website at:

All businesses must complete the program enrolment form before applying for cost-share funding.

Cost-share funding under the Partnership is merit-based and project funding amounts are individually established based on project categories.

Cost-share Funding for Processors and Other Businesses

The next application intake for processors and other businesses (animal health, commercializers and primary agri-food businesses) will occur in late Fall 2019.

The Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) administers cost-share funding to processors and other businesses (animal health, commercializers and primary agri-food businesses).

Cost-share funding under the Partnership is merit-based and project funding amounts are individually established based on project categories.

Market Access Initiative

The Market Access Initiative is a targeted cost-share intake available to help businesses and organizations across the Ontario supply value-chain that are directly involved in or support the production, processing and/or sales of agri-food or agri-products for domestic or export markets and have been directly impacted by trade restrictions.

This targeted intake will focus on a range of trade efforts under the following project categories:

  • Assessment and Planning for Market Development
  • Accessing Markets and Development of Products or Processes - Domestic
  • Accessing Markets and Development of Products or Processes - International

The application intake is now open and will remain open until funding budgeted for this initiative is available.

Eligible applications will be received and assessed on a continuous basis, while funding is available.

Provincially Licensed Abattoirs

Cost-share funding is available for provincially licensed abattoirs to enhance microbial controls and improve hygienic slaughter practices by applying to intake two of the Provincially Licensed Abattoirs Program for the purchase of equipment and structural upgrades.

The program guide is available by emailing or calling 1-877-424-1300.

OMAFRA administers the Partnership cost-share funding to provincial abattoirs. The application intake period will be May 24, 2019 - August 30, 2019.

Workshops, Resources, and eLearning

The ministry continues to offer workshops, resources, and eLearning opportunities at no cost for the agri-food and agri-products sectors.

Business Risk Management

Funding for Business Risk Management (BRM) programs helps ensure producers are protected against significant risks that threaten the viability of their farm and are beyond their capacity to manage.

The federal and provincial governments are reviewing these national programs to ensure they meet producer needs, including timeliness, predictability simplicity, and ability to respond to market risks. In Ontario, Agricorp administers BRM programs.

Federal-only Programs Under the Partnership

In addition to shared Canada-Ontario programs, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) delivers federal programs under the Partnership aimed at generating economic growth in the agricultural sector. For more information about these programs and how to access them, visit the AAFC website.
