Farm Tax and Business Seminar 2009
Introduction Brochure in pdf format (96 kb) IntroductionThe Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) is pleased to present the 2009 Farm Tax and Business Seminar. As in the past, this is an excellent opportunity to update your knowledge of tax, business and legal matters related to agriculture and farm business activities. We are again this year offering the seminar as a Webinar, for those interested in attending the seminar via the web. You can register either by mail, fax or by phone as outlined in the brochure. The registration fee is $150 per person on or before October 19th, 2009 and $180 per person after October 19th, 2009. Please note that cheques are payable to the "Minister of Finance". Register early, save, and guarantee a seat at the seminar. Resource AuthorsSTEPHEN DUFF is a Senior Policy Advisor with the Farm Finance Branch of OMAFRA. He graduated from the University of Guelph with a Masters in Ag Economics in 1996. After working as a Policy Researcher for the Dairy Farmers of Ontario, Stephen joined OMAFRA in 1997. For much of his time at OMAFRA he worked on policy development for the Ontario Farm Income Disaster Program and now the Canadian Agricultural Income Stabilization Program (CAIS). Stephen comes from a dairy and beef background. TED OLDFIELD, LLB is a partner in the law firm of Oldfield, Greaves, D'Agostino, Billo & Nowak in Waterloo. His practice focuses upon agricultural litigation including debtor/creditor disputes, product liability, matrimonial and commercial litigation. Ted has worked extensively with farmers experiencing financial difficulty for over twenty years. During that time, he has appeared before the Farm Debt Mediation Service on a regular basis and has been involved in negotiating and litigating farm debt issues on behalf of farmers on a regular basis throughout his career. He is the Past Chair of the Normal Farm Practices Protection Board which was created under the Farming and Food Production Protection Act. Ted was raised on a beef farm in Melancthon Township in Dufferin County. ROB GAMBLE is the Provincial Specialist in Finance and Business Structures for the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs in Guelph. Raised on a dairy farm in the Ottawa Valley, Rob joined OMAFRA in 1986 and has worked in both the production and business management areas. Rob advises farm families on a wide range of subjects including tax, finance succession and business structure issues. He is the author of numerous OMAFRA publications on business topics and is the coordinator of OMAFRA's Farm Tax and Business Seminars for professional advisors. Rob is a member of the Canadian Tax Foundation and holds a diploma and degree in agriculture from the University of Guelph and a Masters degree in Taxation from the University of Waterloo. FRANKLIN FAMME is a graduate of Wilfrid Laurier University where he obtained
his Honours Bachelor of Business Administration (B.B.A.) degree in 1996.
While at University, Franklin was an appointed delegate for the school
at the Chancellor's Symposium on International trade in 1995. After graduation,
he was employed with Coopers & Lybrand and PricewaterhouseCoopers
chartered accounting firms in Waterloo. Franklin joined Famme & Co.
Chartered Accountants in 1998, the same year he obtained his C.A. designation
from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario. He entered the
partnership of the firm in 2001 and currently works in the Stratford office.
In 2002, Franklin received both his Certified in Management (C.I.M.) and
Chartered Manager (F.CIM) designations from the Canadian Institute of
Management. He services a variety of clients including farm and related
businesses, professionals, construction and related companies, and owner-managed
small businesses. Franklin is a graduate of the Canadian Institute of
Chartered Accountant's In-Depth tax course (2001), and its successor course
on Advanced Tax Issues for the Owner-Managed Business (2006).
