Edible Horticulture Support Program - Supporting Fruit and Vegetable Farmers

The Edible Horticulture Support Program (EHSP) helps small and medium fruit and vegetable farmers manage the impacts to their operations due to various cost pressures they are facing. The EHSP will support Ontario's fruit and vegetable farmers, as well as farmers of mushrooms, nuts, maple, honey, and herbs and spices.

The fruit and vegetable sector is a major contributor to Ontario's agri-food sector, Ontario's economy, and its food security. In 2016, the sector was valued at $2.05 billion, with $1 billion in exports to the U.S. alone. Most of Ontario's agri-food industry operates in an open international market, where commodity prices are set on the world market. Fruit and vegetable producers must also compete against businesses in jurisdictions with lower costs (e.g., lower energy costs and wages).

The program will have a total cost of $60 million - $30 million in each of two years (2018-19 and 2019-20). The design of the program will allow payments to be made quickly and will provide businesses with the certainty they need to make key business decisions for the 2018 growing year.

Intake Dates

No additional actions are needed for producers actively participating in the Self-Directed Risk Management Program (SDRM). Producers not actively participating in SDRM need to contact Agricorp to determine what they need to do to apply. This application period will close March 23, 2018 for the 2018 Program year.
