Guidelines for using insect pheromone and visual traps in Orchards

Click here to go back to scouting.

Pheromone traps should be placed 40-100 m apart. Remove leaves and branches from a 30 cm area around each trap. Check traps twice a week, recording trap count and removing insects from the trap. Replace pheromones and traps throughout the season, referring to manufacturer's instructions on how long pheromones last. Be sure to place traps in orchard prior to insect flight.

Arrangement in orchards

Place traps around the perimeter of the orchard block at no closer than 40 m intervals.

Upwind from wild or abandoned hosts. At least two rows from edge of orchard. Arrange in a line or box pattern. Place mid canopy for orchards not using mating disruption, and in the top third of the canopy for orchards receiving mating disruption.

Upwind from wild or abandoned hosts. At least two rows from edge or orchard. Arrange in a line or box pattern.

Traps should be placed on the south-facing side of the top of the canopy of trees in perimeter rows because most flies are expected to be immigrating from wild hosts outside the orchard.

First generation: emerge in late May through early June.

First generation: emerge late May or early June.

Second generation: emerge in early August.

Overwintering generation moths are active from late June through July. Summer generation is active from August through September.
Late May or early June when early tart cherries begin to show a tinge of colour.
Interpreting catches
Begin accumulating degree days (base 7.2˚ C) at the first sustained moth catch of the first generation (biofix). The rate of development of oriental fruit moth differs between apples/pears and stone fruit so different degree day accumulations are used.  Because newer insecticides work in on different life stages, specific degree accumulations are also used for different products
First sustained moth catch as the biofix. Apply insecticides at 83-138 DDC (base 10°C) after biofix for 1st generation; and 611-694 DDC after first generation sustained moth catch for 2nd generation.

First sustained catch is considered biofix. Apply first spray at 240 DDC (base 6.1°C) after biofix. Apply subsequent sprays as necessary.

Insecticides should be delayed for about a week after first catch to target ovipositing females, when early varieties are beginning to show red colour.  Repeat in about 10 days. Later varieties may require additional sprays.
