Zipper-like girdle marks found on raspberry primocane t

The two zipper-like girdle marks found on raspberry primocane tips are caused by which insect:

That's right!

Sorry.

This damage is caused by raspberry cane borer females that create the zipper-like marks just above and below the site of oviposition. This causes the shoot tip to bend and eventually die above the point of injury.

Red-necked cane borer females deposit eggs directly on the primocane bark and upon hatching, the larvae chew their way into the cane tissue. This causes the cane to become swollen often forming a swelling or gall.

Raspberry crown borer females lay their eggs on the underside of young leaves and the larvae migrate down the cane to overwinter in the crown tissue. They can create extensive tunneling and feeding damage in the crown tissue, indirectly affecting the entire cane.
